DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.E. degree program with an intake of 30 students in a year. The department has over 15 instructional and research laboratories, equipped with some of the research instruments and systems. Mechanical Engineering plays a crucial role in manufacturing of automobiles to airplanes, from refrigerators to cryogenic engines. The department has progressed over time to keep up with the challenges in technology advancement, while maintaining a strong base in the fundamental aspects of Mechanical Engineering.

Our research labs include Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research centre, Digital Manufacturing and Additive Manufacturing. Several faculty members serve as reviewer of technical articles for International and National Journals. Graduating students have excellent opportunities to build a career in manufacturing industry and research - in automotive, aerospace, heavy machinery, pharmaceutical and chemical process plants, and power generation.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Duration & Eligibility of Mechanical Engineering Course:

  • DURATION:

    4 Years.

  • ELIGIBILITY:

    Pass in 10+2 / Higher Secondary (HS) / Pre University (PUC) / 'A' Level (with 12 years of schooling) or its equivalent with English as one of the languages.

    Shall have secured a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate in Physics, Mathematics and any one of the following : Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Electronics.

    AIT admits students as per prevailing rules and regulations of VTU.

  • Dr. Srikumar Biradar has been selected for the AICTE QIP – PG Certification Program from IIT Ropar.
  • Funds Generated ₹18,86,496 through consultancy in collaboration with SIEMENS.
  • Faculty members have completed NPTEL courses.
  • Faculty members have supervised projects sponsored by KSCST and VTU.
  • 30 publications in SCI/SCOPUS journals over the past three years.
  • Faculty members have attended FDPs to enrich their knowledge.
STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS
  • Mr. Varun Raj P secured 10th rank in VTU for the academic year 2023–24.
  • Ms. A. Archana Royal was recognized as the Best Outgoing Student of AY 2023–24.
  • Ms. Diyashree Chatterjee secured the highest placement package and was placed in Tata Electronics.
  • Gagan V. Naidu and his team received financial assistance of ₹1,48,000 to develop a working prototype under the CMTI Design and Innovation Scheme.
  • Monish Kumar secured a three-month internship in heat treatment, milling, and process planning for a guide rod under the CMTI Design and Innovation Scheme.
  • Student projects received funding from KSCST.
  • A batch of student projects won second prize in SRISHTI – a state-level project exhibition.
  • 5 students became entrepreneurs.
  • 12 are pursuing Master’s degrees, out of which 8 are in various International Universities of high repute.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)

The graduates will be able to:

  • PEO 1: Apply fundamental Basic Science and Computer aided technology to solve problems encountered in all streams of Mechanical Engineering and beyond like Robotics, Nano science and Computational fluid dynamics.
  • PEO 2: Demonstrate professionalism and accountability by applying their technical skills and knowledge; across the spectrum of scientific disciplines in Additive manufacturing, Digital mechatronics thereby supporting local and global societies.
  • PEO 3: Work ethically both as an individual and as a team member, eventually becoming leaders in various domains such as entrepreneurship, education, and administration.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs)

Mechanical Engineering graduates will be able to learn:

  • Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  • Design/Development of Solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • Modern Tool Usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  • Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  • Individual and Team Work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  • Project Management and Finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
  • Life-Long Learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC OUTCOMES (PSOs)

  • PSO 1: Apply concepts and principles from Applied Mechanics to design, develop and evaluate Mechanical components or systems including Robotics drives for a specified purpose using computational tools.
  • PSO 2: Create Mechanical systems using energy conversion edifices governing laws of Thermodynamics, Heat transfer, Fluid Power and Computation fluid dynamics along with their embedded controllers as per requirements and specifications.
  • PSO 3: Utilizing the knowledge and learning of materials and manufacturing and Nano sciences to design, plan and monitor production operations in an industry emphasizing Additive manufacturing, Digital mechatronics, Total quality, Managerial aspects in improvement of life cycle of a product / system keeping environmental considerations.

DEPARTMENT RESEARCH DETAILS

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is well qualified with eminent faculty members who are guiding Ph.D. scholars in advanced areas of Mechanical Engineering like Additive Manufacturing, Nano Materials etc. The department is actively involved in current areas of Mechanical Engineering presenting papers at conferences and reputed journals. A track record of at least one project-proposal getting selected every year in KSCST Annual Project Proposal Contests. Faculty of the department have executed many research projects supported by VTU, KSCST, VGST and other prestigious educational and research-oriented organizations. Regular technical talks and seminars/workshops are being conducted for both faculty and students. Below numbers display the strength of the department in terms of research.
